For our next interview as part of our series of for Disability History Month - which is taking place until 20 December – Patient and Public Involvement member, Daniel, spoke to us about his disability and why he’s involved in research.

“I had both hips replaced in December 2019 and December 2021, but unfortunately never had the opportunity for physiotherapy due to lockdown and the muscle mass on both of my hips never recovered. Now, I use a battery powered mobility scooter to get around.

“I face many challenges, particularly if I am attending a meeting in central London, which I often do. I always have to plan my route to ensure I’m travelling via a tube station that is accessible.

“If I drive into London, then whoever I am meeting with will either a reserve a Blue Badge parking space for me at their offices or I will pay for parking and get reimbursed for my expense.”

Daniel has been a member of the PPI group at the King’s Clinical Research Facility (CRF) since it began. Recently, he has expressed interest in giving feedback on various stroke research projects, such as the use of artificial intelligence to provide life-saving care in stroke patients.

He is also a ‘Research Champion’ for other parts of the National Institute of Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) within London, as well as a lay subject matter expert for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

“I have taken part in numerous clinical trials, PPI projects, and workshops all over the UK. It is my way of giving something back to an NHS that has served me so well, particularly in the past 11 years.”
