Professor Gráinne McAlonan appointed as new Director of the NIHR Maudsley BRC

Professor Gráinne McAlonan has been appointed as Director of the NIHR Maudsley BRC. Gráinne has been Interim Director of the BRC since last summer. The NIHR Maudsley BRC is part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and hosted by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with King's College London.

2023: A year in review

This year marked the launch of our research themes (2022-27) campaign, and a number of projects to showcase and enable research taking place throughout our host organisations, such as a photography exhibition in the Maudsley Hospital and the launch of an NIHR Research Support Service at King's College London.

We made the headlines - from the news that 1 in 5 of us experience misophonia, to the links between mental illness and shorter life spans. Our blog explored topical issues, looking at how we can develop an ethical AI for healthcare, and the impact of the welfare system on mental health, among other subjects.

Breaking down barriers: Advancing gender equity in psychiatry

Professional development in psychiatry, as in other fields, has its challenges but are they experienced differently across genders? Our NIHR Maudsley BRC Champion for Culture, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Pinto da Costa recently co-authored a study published in the journal European Psychiatry surveying over 500 psychiatrists on the gender-specific challenges currently faced by the profession. In this blog she discusses the insights from the study and calls for a more inclusive and equitable future.

New NIHR Research Support Service established at King's College London

The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) has awarded £6.8 million to King’s College London to establish a new Research Support Service that will focus on mental health and neuroscience. Led by Professor Richard Emsley, the Research Support Service managed by King’s College London will form part of a national network of eight RSS hubs which will start work from 1 October 2023.
