South London and Maudsley rated top mental health trust for recruiting patients to clinical studies

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has been rated top mental health trust in the country for recruiting patients to clinical studies, by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network (CRN).

Dr Fiona Gaughran, Lead Consultant for National Psychosis Service and the Research and Development Director at South London and Maudsley, feels the work at both the CRN and South London and Maudsley is having an effect on mental health research across the country.  She said:

“The development of the CRN and the associated structures have helped increase research activity across the board and I have no doubt the NIHR CRN system is one of the main elements driving the rise in mental health research nationally. Trusts now know that they will be given support and resources for research and so are looking for opportunities through the CRN to increase their research activity.”

Promoting, conducting and using clinical research to improve treatments for patients is part of the NHS England Constitution. The NIHR Research Activity League Table provides a picture of how much clinical research is happening, where, in what types of trusts, and involving how many patients.

Over 60% of NHS Trusts across the country increased the number of clinical research studies undertaken in their trust last year, contributing to the drive for better treatments for all NHS patients.

The NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre is a partnership between South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London, which aims to advance medical research out of the laboratory and into the clinic.  As such, the success of South London and Maudsley and other Trusts in recruiting patients to clinical research will be welcomed by staff and researchers across the NIHR Maudsley BRC.
