EDI representatives for BRC announced

As part of NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy we have appointed 14 representatives to support our work. The NIHR Maudsley BRC themes and core programmes each have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) lead researcher. They are responsible for championing local EDI initiatives.

Ethnicity mismatches in administrative data linkages

In this blog Alice Wickersham, Research Associate at King's IoPPN, reflects on the journey of exploring the data from the Department of Education and data from Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system, how she discovered a mismatch in their ethnicity variables and what this means for research in this area. With other authors from IoPPN and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust she has published a paper on this subject in BMJ Open.

Pioneering link between census data and electronic mental health records

Researchers at King's College London, supported by the NIHR Maudsley BRC, are the first research team in England to link electronic mental healthcare records to census data, at an individual level. Published in the ‘BMJ Open’ and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) the study involved linking de-identified data (with personal information removed) of 459,374 patients from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust to census data from 2011.

2023: A year in review

This year marked the launch of our research themes (2022-27) campaign, and a number of projects to showcase and enable research taking place throughout our host organisations, such as a photography exhibition in the Maudsley Hospital and the launch of an NIHR Research Support Service at King's College London.

We made the headlines - from the news that 1 in 5 of us experience misophonia, to the links between mental illness and shorter life spans. Our blog explored topical issues, looking at how we can develop an ethical AI for healthcare, and the impact of the welfare system on mental health, among other subjects.

Breaking down barriers: Advancing gender equity in psychiatry

Professional development in psychiatry, as in other fields, has its challenges but are they experienced differently across genders? Our NIHR Maudsley BRC Champion for Culture, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Dr Pinto da Costa recently co-authored a study published in the journal European Psychiatry surveying over 500 psychiatrists on the gender-specific challenges currently faced by the profession. In this blog she discusses the insights from the study and calls for a more inclusive and equitable future.
