Genetic study reveals metabolic origins of anorexia

A global study, led by researchers at King’s College London and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, suggests that anorexia nervosa is at least partly a metabolic disorder, and not purely psychiatric as previously thought.

Transforming anorexia nervosa treatment for adults

MANTRA (Maudsley Model of Anorexia Treatment for Adults) is a manual-based outpatient treatment for adults developed by investigators at the NIHR Maudsley BRC. MANTRA consists of seven core modules conducted over 20-40 sessions.

Top mental health trust in England for number of research studies

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust was the top mental health trust in the country for the number of open studies last year with 101 studies available for patients to participate in. This was up by 14 per cent from 89 studies the previous year. This is according to new figures from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

Professor Ulrike Schmidt chosen as one of the NHS70 Women Leaders

Ulrike Schmidt, Professor of Eating Disorders at the IoPPN, has been announced as one of the NHS70 Women Leaders. This recognition award for women leaders in healthcare is in celebration of the NHS turning 70 years old, and 100 years of women’s suffrage. This award was presented by the Women’s Leadership Academy, part of the NHS London Leadership Academy.

Successful early intervention approach to eating disorders rolled out across England

A programme called First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders (FREED) developed by NIHR Maudsley BRC researchers demonstrated the positive impact of early intervention. Teenagers and young adults (aged 16-25) who came forward for treatment were contacted within 48 hours and commenced treatment as soon as two weeks later.
